Adding a modem string in Windows

This article will teach you how to add a modem string for a dialup modem in various versions of Windows. The instructions are all very similar, but the way to get to the Phone and Modem options has changed over the years.

You'll find more information about strings for your specific dialup modem in its user manual, or by searching online. There are certain commands which may be added to modem strings which can be useful for troubleshooting purposes.

  1. Right-click on the Start menu button, then select Control Panel.
     
  2. Double-click Phone and Modem, then select the Modems tab. If you don't see Phone and Modem, use the search bar at the top right or switch to "small icon" view.
     
  3. Highlight your modem by clicking its name and then click the Properties button.
     
  4. Select the Advanced tab. Enter the modem string goes in the box under "Extra Initialisation Settings".
     
  5. Click OK on all open popup windows to save the settings and finish.
