Invoice Alignments Explained

This article will explain the general purpose of invoice alignments used by our billing system. For information specific to mobile services, please see Mobile Billing Explained.

We offer a wide range of products and some of them have different ways of being billed, so invoice alignments are often necessary when a plan is changed or a new service is added to an account. No additional fees are involved; it's simply an adjustment to make sure you're billed the correct rate for the exact days you had a particular plan or service.

Select one of the links below to jump to a query:

Your billing anniversary date

Your billing anniversary date is set when your first iiNet service is activated. This is the date your iiNet bills are typically due each month.

Your billing anniversary date also sets the billing dates for your individual services (e.g. Billed period: 04 JAN 2017 - 04 FEB 2017). If you get additional iiNet services, their billing is aligned to match these billing dates.

Your invoice after service activation

New customers

Your first invoice will include one month’s plan fee in advance for your service(s) along with any applicable setup or hardware fees.

If you ordered multiple services, please refer to Existing customers information below. Your invoice may contain alignments if one service was activated and your invoice was raised before the rest of your services were activated.

Existing customers where service is activated BEFORE monthly invoice received

If you already have iiNet services, your billing dates have already been set. When another service activates, our billing system will align it to the existing billing dates for your other iiNet services.

This means that your next invoice would include:

  • Adjusted plan fee for the remainder of the current month
This covers the exact number of days remaining in the billing period. You'd also receive a adjusted quota/allowance (for example, 10 days worth of data for your plan) where applicable. Unlimited allowances won't be adjusted (we recommend you don't try to divide infinity unless you want a headache).

  • One month's plan fee in advance
Our services are billed one month in advance. If you ever change plans or cancel your service, any unused plan fees you paid in advance will be credited back to your iiNet account.

Example: You have Naked DSL, and you decide to add Fetch TV, which is activated on 5 March.

Your invoice is raised on 10 March and it’s due on 24 March (your billing anniversary date).

The invoice would include the following charges:

  • Fetch TV plan fee, adjusted for the remainder of the current month – 5 March to 24 March
  • Fetch TV plan fee, one month in advance – 24 March to 24 April
  • Any applicable hardware or setup fees for Fetch TV
  • Your usual Naked DSL fee, one month in advance – 24 March to April 24

Existing customers where service is activated AFTER monthly invoice received

If you already have iiNet services, your billing dates have already been set. When another service activates, our billing system will align it to the existing billing dates for your other iiNet services.

However, if a service is activated after your invoice has been issued for the current month, then all charges for your new service will be delayed until the next month.

This means that the invoice issue in the next month would include:

  • Adjusted plan fee for the previous month
This covers the exact number of days remaining in the billing period. You'd also receive a adjusted quota/allowance (for example, 10 days worth of data for your plan) where applicable. Unlimited allowances won't be adjusted (we recommend you don't try to divide infinity unless you want a headache).

  • One month's plan fee for the current month

  • One month's plan fee in advance
Our services are billed one month in advance. If you ever change plans or cancel your service, any unused plan fees you paid in advance will be credited back to your iiNet account.

Example: Your invoice is raised on 21 November and it’s due 14 days later on 4 December (your billing anniversary date).

Your new NBN broadband service is activated on 28 November.

Because your invoice was already raised on 21 November, it doesn't include any charges for your NBN broadband during November or December.

This means that your next invoice (issued 21 December, due 4 January) would cover the following charges for your new NBN broadband service:

  • Adjusted NBN plan fee for previous month – 28 November to 4 December
  • NBN plan fee for the current month – 4 December to 4 January
  • NBN plan fee, one month in advance – 4 January to 4 February
  • Any applicable hardware or setup fees for NBN

Your invoice after changing plans

If you change plans on one of your iiNet services, you'll receive a credit on your iiNet account for any unused plan fees that you paid in advance.

You will then be charged in advance at the rate for your new plan.

This means that you'll pay the correct rate for the exact days you had each plan.

Please note that changing plans does not ‘reset’ your usage to zero (e.g. broadband quota, call allowance, mobile data). You’ll receive a proportionately adjusted amount of your new plan’s quota/allowance for the remainder of your current billing period. For example, instead of having 10 days worth of you old plan’s allowances left, you’ll have 10 days worth of your new plan’s allowances until your next billing period.

Example: Your billing anniversary date is the 25th of each month.

Your current mobile plan has been paid in advance up to 25 July.

However, you change your mobile plan on 10 June.

Your following invoice (issued 11 June, due 25 June) would include the following credits and charges for your mobile plan:

  • Credit for the unused days you paid in advance for your old mobile plan – 10 June to 25 July
  • Your new mobile plan fee, adjusted for the remainder of the current month – 10 June to 25 July
  • Your new mobile plan fee, one month in advance – 25 July to 25 August
