Upgrading the iiNet TG-789 Firmware

This article will explain how to manually upgrade the firmware for an iiNet TG-789 (TGIINET-789) modem router.

Your TG-789 should automatically update to the latest firmware, however if it's switched off for an extended period of time, it may have missed an automatic update. If this is the case, you can upgrade the firmware manually using these instructions.

Upgrading the TG-789 firmware

If you need to check the current firmware installed on your TG-789, simply follow steps 2-4 below. You'll find the current firmware version listed next to "Firmware Version".

  1. Download the latest firmware file from our website at ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/iinet/firmware/TG789vacV2/VANT-6/
If you don't have internet access at your location, you may need to go elsewhere to download the firmware file onto a USB flash drive, CD or another form of portable file storage. You can use this to get the firmware file onto your computer or device that's connected to your modem.
  2. On a computer or WiFi device that's connected to your Home Gateway, open your web browser and go to
  3. Log in with the default username "admin" and default password (printed on the sticker on the base of your modem next to 'Password'). If you have changed the username and/or password from the defaults, use your custom details instead.
  4. Select Gateway from the dashboard.

  5. On this page, scroll down and click the Browse button next to "Upgrade firmware".

  6. Locate the firmware file you saved on your computer, select it and then click OK.
  7. Click the Upgrade button.

  8. The update may take 2-5 minutes to complete, at which point your TG-789 will reboot and your web browser should return to the login page.

IMPORTANT: Do not turn off your modem during the firmware upgrade.

  9. After upgrading the firmware, your modem needs to be reset to factory defaults. Please note that doing this will wipe all custom settings from the modem, including your internet configuration and WiFi networks.
  10. Log back into modem settings at
  11. Select Gateway from the dashboard.
  12. On this page, scroll down a bit and then click the Reset button next to "Factory Defaults".

  13. The message "Resetting to factory defaults please wait..." will appear below the button. The modem may take 2-5 minutes to factory reset, at which point your web browser will return to the login page.
  14. Log back in with the default password "admin". If you previously had a custom password, this would have been wiped during the factory reset and you'll need to set it up again.
  15. Follow the Quick Setup Guide (available here) for your modem to set up your broadband, WiFi and Netphone (VoIP) services again. If you get stuck at any point, feel free to give us a call on 13 22 58 and we'll be happy to help.
