This article will answer some frequently asked questions about data usage, quotas and the shaping process used for iiNet broadband services.
"Quota" is the amount of data you may use each month as a part of your internet plan. Whenever you use the internet (e.g. look at websites, upload or download files, watch videos) data traffic passes through your internet connection and is counted towards your monthly quota.

This information is useful if you have one of our broadband plans with a monthly quota. If you have one of our Liimitless plans, you don't need to worry about quota or shaping because your usage is unlimited. You can check on our website to see if a Liimitless broadband plan is available at your address.
As a general guide, 1GB of data usage will let you:
Your usage of each service may vary. The guide above is based on the following assumptions:
Email received at 100KB per email, web browsing at 30MB per hour, YouTube 4min video clip at 24MB per clip (standard 360p quality), music downloaded at 4MB per track, photo downloads at 2MB per photo.

If your plan has peak/offpeak quota, that means you have two separate quotas – one for a peak period and one for an offpeak period. Plans with Anytime quota have a single quota that may be used at any time of the day or night.
Our current on-net plans (i.e. connections via the iiNetwork) include anytime quota. Off-net plans (i.e. connections via our wholesaler’s network), usually include peak and offpeak quotas.
There are different peak and offpeak periods for different broadband plans. The best way to find the peak or offpeak period for your plan is by checking your usage in Toolbox. The peak and offpeak periods are included on the usage meter page.
Alternatively, you could look up the peak/offpeak period in your plan's specific Critical Information Summary, but the Toolbox method is faster and much easier, especially if you're not sure when your plan was sold.

Yes, they're treated as separate quotas. If you use all of your Peak quota, your service will be shaped during the peak period but it will not be shaped during the offpeak period. You can find the timeframes for peak/offpeak on your broadband plan while checking your broadband usage in Toolbox.
For this reason, you'll need to specifically buy a "Peak" Data Pack in Toolbox if you've used all of your Peak quota and want to get unshaped before your quota resets.
If you exceed your quota on one of our current fixed-line broadband plans, you will not incur any excess data fees. Instead, the speed of your service will be shaped to a slower speed for both downloads and uploads.
This speed varies depending on your specific broadband plan. Common shaping speeds are 128kbps, 256kbps and 512kbps, although different shaping speeds may apply to other plans, particularly those on the latest NBN™ technologies.
Your internet speeds will return to normal when your quota resets. If you want to remove the shaping before your quota resets, you'll need to either buy a Data Pack or upgrade your plan through your Toolbox.
You can check when your monthly quota resets on your Toolbox dashboard when checking quota usage in Toolbox.
Yes, both downloads and uploads counted towards your quota.
The term "monthly quota" may imply that your usage is counted from the 1st to the 1st of each month, but it probably isn't. Your monthly usage is counted in line with your billing cycle, which runs monthly from your billing anniversary day.
The activation of your very first iiNet service sets your billing anniversary. For example, if your first service activated on the 20th of the month, then your billing cycle and your monthly quota would run from the 20th to the 20th of each month.
Please note that we do have some Mobile services that are billed from the 1st to the 1st of each month regardless of your iiNet billing cycle due to a requirement from our wholesalers.
Your quota does not reset if you change plans. Your current quota usage will be deducted from the total quota of your new plan. For example, if you have used 20GB out of a 100GB plan and you downgrade to a 50GB plan, your usage will be 20GB out of 50GB.
You will receive the full quota for your new plan when you begin a new billing cycle.
